Kathie’s surgery went well, the surgeon was pleased and she was awake in the recovery room by 2:30 pm. She should be out of the hospital by 11 am tomorrow morning. Our prayers for a smooth procedure were answered in the affirmative and we thank God.
Last night and this morning I prayed and prepared for Kathie’s surgery by reading Oswald Chambers Devotional My Utmost for His Highest, here are portions of today’s reading and the irony of the title always causes me to pay attention.
“Out of the Wreck I Rise, Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? —Romans 8:35
God does not keep His child immune from trouble; He promises, “I will be with him in trouble . . .” (Psalm 91:15). It doesn’t matter how real or intense the adversities may be; nothing can ever separate him from his relationship to God. “In all these things we are more than conquerors . . .” (Romans 8:37). Paul was not referring here to imaginary things, but to things that are dangerously real. And he said we are “super-victors” in the midst of them, not because of our own ingenuity, nor because of our courage, but because none of them affects our essential relationship with God in Jesus Christ…
Either Jesus Christ is a deceiver, having deceived even Paul, or else some extraordinary thing happens to someone who holds on to the love of God when the odds are totally against him. Logic is silenced in the face of each of these things which come against him. Only one thing can account for it— the love of God in Christ Jesus. “Out of the wreck I rise” every time.”
We haven’t been to Sharp Memorial Hospital for quite a while; the construction that was taking place in 2005 and the days after our accident was completed last year. This morning, the first room Kathie was taken to was the pre-surgery area formally the ICU, I immediately recognized the corner area she occupied during the traumatic first weeks following our accident. We followed all the procedures and waited for the 1:00 pm surgery appointment. I followed Kathie to the surgical door and started walking toward the waiting room. I “bumped” into Kathie’s neuro-surgeon in a hallway (do you really think this happened by chance? He does morning rounds and afternoon office hours all the time); I thanked him again for all the care he had given Kathie. He lamented, “The poor woman,” now years later, he still wished he could have done more; he worked to save her life but couldn’t save more of her. I told him that I enjoy the time I have with her and we shook hands.
Andy came to the hospital after work and we talked as Kath kept nodding off then waking up. I am having a friend who helped me monitor Kathie’s breathing sit with her until 11 pm, this allowed me to have dinner with the Girls and I will return early tomorrow morning. When Andy and I left this evening, Kathie was sleeping soundly, very relaxed and beginning the healing process.
Thanks be to God for His care of Kathie,
Dave
