The true test of a
person’s spiritual life and character is not what he does in the extraordinary
moments of life, but what he does during the ordinary times when there is
nothing tremendous or exciting happening. A person’s worth is revealed in his
attitude toward the ordinary things of life when he is not under the spotlight
(see John 1:35-37 and John 3:30). It is painful work to get in step with God
and to keep pace with Him— it means getting your second wind spiritually. In
learning to walk with God, there is always the difficulty of getting into His
stride, but once we have done so, the only characteristic that exhibits itself
is the very life of God Himself. The individual person is merged into a
personal oneness with God, and God’s stride and His power alone are exhibited. My Utmost for His
Highest, October 12.
A busy
couple of months, I assisted the hairdresser as she cut and colored Kathie’s
hair, by coordinating a bath night, a hairdresser’s schedule and my schedule,
we are able to accomplish this task in about two hours and Kathie is very
patient with us. Kathie will actually let out an audible sigh when the process
is taking too long.
On
September 27 Kathie rode the Coronado Ferry and I met her group at the
Landing in Coronado. Kathie and I then visited with the staff of the Sharp
Coronado Sub-acute Unit where she lived for almost 4 years. All the staff ladies were
very happy to see Kathie and gathered around her. Next we visited Kathie’s old
roommate Maria, her mother and private caregiver. We enjoyed our visit, you
might remember from past writings that I refer to Maria as “my favorite brat,”
I always get a smile when I kiss her forehead and call her that. We then visited
another patient Vanessa and her Mom. It has been 3 years since we were at Sharp
Coronado and the care-giving continues each day for these families. We have a
friendship created from tragic circumstances.
October
10th we traveled to the local Shopping Mall and shopped for
clothing, lotion, a new pack that will fit on her wheelchair, I picked up a new
cable in the Apple Store. We get our share of looks and smiles as we navigate
store aisles and mall walkways, the day is exhausting but well worth the
effort.
Hannah
is doing well in high school, she is on the Cheer squad and the police officer
who was her Safety Patrol leader in 5th Grade was on duty at the football
game. He was very pleased to see her and the assisting officer laughed as I
showed off the picture of Colonel Hannah in uniform with her officer from years
ago, both of them looked younger.
Madison
is at SFSU, enjoying college and sorority life but she did ask for a trip home
and I enjoyed having my grown up girl home for a long weekend.
At the
Mall with Kathie, I recognized the blessing of having her awake the whole time
and each time I talked to her she seemed to be looking and listening to me, I enjoyed being
with her very much.
On October 23 we will be at the dentist office for a
check-up that requires anesthesia and a day off of work, we continue working
out our faith in the ordinary times of our life.
Dave
& Kathie
Keep the Faith dear friends on the journey!!
